Vivien Thomas (1910–1985) was the surgical technician who, working with Alfred Blalock and Helen Taussig at Johns Hopkins, developed the shunt procedure that in 1944 first saved 'blue babies' born with tetralogy of Fallot. Hired as a janitor in Blalock's Vanderbilt laboratory in 1930, he performed the experimental surgery behind the operation and coached generations of surgeons through it. Johns Hopkins named him an instructor of surgery and awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1976.
