PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

John C. Drake is chief of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, the second Black man to lead it. A Nashville native, Drake joined the MNPD in 1988 after briefly considering the ministry, and worked patrol, vice-narcotics investigations, and the Police Athletic League, coaching boxers and baseball players whom city leaders still cite as the template for his community-first instincts. He commanded the Central Precinct from 2015, became deputy chief in 2017 and deputy chief for community services in June 2020. When Chief Steve Anderson resigned in the summer of 2020 amid criticism of the department, Mayor John Cooper named Drake interim chief that August; as interim he reorganized the homicide division into a centralized unit, ended the department's practice of executing certain search warrants at night, and gained the trust of council members and activists. On November 30, 2020, Cooper named him the department's eighth chief. The Tennessean's framing at the time: only the second Black man to hold the job. Three weeks into his tenure, Nashville was bombed on Christmas morning 2020, and the department Drake led was first into the evacuated downtown corridor. In March 2023 his department's response to the Covenant School shooting drew national attention. He remains Nashville's chief.
