Andre Nolan Dawson (born July 10, 1954, in Miami, Florida), nicknamed “The Hawk,” was an American baseball outfielder whose combination of power, speed and defense made him one of the defining players of his era. The National Baseball Hall of Fame describes him as a rare all-around athlete whose abilities with the bat, on the base paths and in the field secured his place in Cooperstown. Drafted by the Montreal Expos in 1975, he debuted in 1976 and won National League Rookie of the Year honors in 1977. After a decade starring in Montreal, Dawson signed with the Chicago Cubs for 1987 and produced a career year on Wrigley Field's grass after Montreal's artificial turf had punished his knees. According to the National Baseball Hall of Fame (accessed 2026-11-03), he led the majors that season with 49 home runs and 137 RBI and became the first player from a last-place team named league MVP. The Hall credits him with 2,774 hits, 438 home runs, 1,591 RBI and 314 stolen bases over 21 seasons, eight Gold Glove Awards, and status as only the second player, after Willie Mays, to reach 400 home runs and 300 steals. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010.

Notes
Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0283. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Dawson's Chicago meaning is reinvention — a superstar who took less money to play on grass and won an MVP for a last-place club; CTL should present the Cubs years as a study in labor, injury and self-determination, not only as highlights. Career statistics in this record are attributed to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Baseball-Reference, accessed 2026-11-03. STAGED record — not merged into any live store.
Relationships
- Chicago Cubs — played for
