Combined Graph record U-07696 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-6824.

Charles Oakley (born December 18, 1963, in Cleveland, Ohio) was an American basketball power forward and center whose rebounding, defense and physical presence defined an era of Eastern Conference basketball. A Cleveland native, he starred at Virginia Union University, a Division II historically Black university, leading the Panthers to a 31–1 season as a senior and earning NCAA Division II Player of the Year honors before Cleveland selected him ninth overall in the 1985 NBA draft and traded his rights to the Chicago Bulls. With Chicago he made the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1986 and, as PSA's CardFacts profile notes, led the league in total rebounds in his early Bulls seasons while protecting a young Michael Jordan. Traded to the New York Knicks in 1988, he spent ten seasons as the Knicks' enforcer, earning his only All-Star selection and All-Defensive First Team honors in 1994, when he started a record 107 games in one season, regular season and playoffs combined. He later played for Toronto, returned briefly to Chicago, and finished with Washington and Houston in 2004. According to Basketball-Reference (accessed 2026-11-03), Oakley averaged 9.7 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists over 1,282 career games, totaling 12,417 points and 12,205 rebounds.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0336. Grading note: Provisional under GOV-004 because, although two independent reputable sources (Basketball-Reference and PSA CardFacts) support this record, no source from the authoritative set named in the brief (Hall of Fame, NBA.com, team/league official, Britannica) was verified for Oakley in this pass; upgrade on sighting an NBA.com or team-official profile. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Oakley matters to CTL as an HBCU (Virginia Union) product whose “enforcer” labor protected stars in Chicago and anchored New York — a record about the value of defensive and physical work that box scores understate. Career statistics in this record are attributed to Basketball-Reference, accessed 2026-11-03. STAGED record — not merged into any live store.
