Luol Ajou Deng (born April 16, 1985, in Wau, in what was then Sudan and is now South Sudan) is a South Sudanese-born British former basketball player whose career joined Chicago basketball to a global story of migration and nation-building. A member of the Dinka people, Deng fled Sudan's civil war with his family as a child, lived in Egypt, and settled in the United Kingdom, where he became a British citizen in 2006 and later represented Great Britain, including at the London 2012 Olympics. After one season at Duke University, he was selected seventh overall in the 2004 NBA draft by Phoenix and traded to the Chicago Bulls, where he played from 2004 to 2014, made the All-Rookie First Team in 2005, earned All-Star selections in 2012 and 2013, and was named to the All-Defensive Second Team in 2012. He later played for Cleveland, Miami, the Los Angeles Lakers (2016–2018) and Minnesota, retiring in 2019 after signing a one-day contract to retire as a Bull. FIBA records that Deng was then elected president of the South Sudan Basketball Federation in November 2019, a post he has used to build the game in his birth country.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0338. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Deng is this set's diaspora record — born in Wau, raised in London, an All-Star in Chicago, and then a federation president building South Sudanese basketball; CTL should present him as Chicago's bridge to African basketball, not only as a Bulls forward. No career statistics are asserted in this record beyond sourced honors; team and biographical facts are attributed to FIBA, accessed 2026-11-03. STAGED record — not merged into any live store.
