Combined Graph record U-07708 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-6836.

Mike Singletary was the middle linebacker and emotional center of the Chicago Bears' celebrated 1980s defense, a Houston-born, Baylor-developed player who became one of the defining defensive figures in franchise history. Selected by the Bears in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft out of Baylor University — where many teams had considered the 5-foot-11 linebacker too short for the middle — Singletary became a starter during his rookie season and went on to play all twelve of his NFL seasons in Chicago. The Chicago Bears credit him with ten Pro Bowl selections, eight All-Pro selections and Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards in 1985 and 1988, together with a Super Bowl championship with the 1985 Bears, winners of Super Bowl XX. Known as 'the Heart of the Defense' for the Monsters of the Midway, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1998, in his first year of eligibility.

Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Singletary anchors the linebacker lineage CTL documents for Chicago — drafted by the Bears in 1981, he spent his entire playing career with the franchise and entered the Hall of Fame in 1998, making him one of the clearest drafted-and-kept success stories in Bears history.
