Combined Graph record U-07730 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-6858.

Bianca Smith (born 1991), from Sewickley, Pennsylvania, is a baseball coach whose route to professional baseball ran through playing softball at Dartmouth College, serving as director of baseball operations at Case Western Reserve University while earning MBA and law degrees there, interning with the Texas Rangers and in Major League Baseball's amateur administration, and coaching at Carroll University in Wisconsin as assistant coach and hitting coordinator. In January 2021 the Boston Red Sox hired her as a minor-league coach in their player-development system, based at the club's Fort Myers, Florida complex working mainly with position players — making her the first Black woman to become a professional baseball coach, a claim supported here by both MiLB.com (reporting by MLB.com's Ian Browne) and Dartmouth College Athletics. She coached in the Red Sox system in 2021 and 2022 and has stated her ambition to manage a major-league team.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0304. Firsts disposition: 'First Black woman to become a professional baseball coach' ASSERTED — supported by MiLB.com/MLB.com and Dartmouth College Athletics. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Smith's first is a qualifications story as much as a barrier story — operations, law, and hitting instruction stacked until an organization had no honest reason left to say no. The record keeps the claim at its sourced scope: professional baseball coaching, from January 2021. Photo: HELD — no depicting Commons file found.
