VERIFIED evidence grade — build store (JSON graph)

Combined Graph record U-07742 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-6870.

Arthur Lee Shell Jr. (born November 26, 1946, in Charleston, South Carolina) was first a Hall of Fame offensive tackle: drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the third round in 1968 out of Maryland State College (now the University of Maryland Eastern Shore), he played for the Raiders through 1982, earned eight Pro Bowl selections, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989 on his playing career. The historic first attaches to coaching. On October 9, 1989, Shell debuted as head coach of the Los Angeles Raiders — the first Black head coach in the NFL's modern era, as both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore record — winning his debut against the New York Jets. The qualifier is exact: Fritz Pollard had coached in the league's 1920s era, so Shell's first is the modern era's. He coached the Raiders through 1994, compiling a 56–41 record, and returned for a second stint in 2006.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0392. Firsts disposition: 'First Black head coach in the NFL's modern era' (Los Angeles Raiders, 1989) ASSERTED — supported by the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, with the South Carolina Encyclopedia corroborating. The modern-era qualifier is load-bearing (Fritz Pollard coached in the 1920s) and is kept in the claim itself. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Shell earned the Hall of Fame as a player before he ever held a clipboard, which is precisely why Al Davis's hire could not be dismissed as symbolism. The playing greatness underwrote the coaching first. Photo: CLEARED — Art Shell in 2006.jpg, CC BY-SA 2.0.
