Floyd Patterson (1935–2006), born January 4, 1935, in Waco, North Carolina, and raised in Brooklyn, New York, was the American heavyweight boxer whom Encyclopaedia Britannica identifies as the first to hold the world heavyweight championship twice. Britannica records that Patterson won New York Golden Gloves titles in 1951 and 1952 and earned the gold medal as a middleweight at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, then on November 30, 1956, knocked out Archie Moore in five rounds in Chicago to capture the title vacated by Rocky Marciano — at the time the youngest person to hold the championship, at 21. After losing the title to Sweden's Ingemar Johansson on June 26, 1959, Patterson regained it on June 20, 1960, with a fifth-round knockout of Johansson, becoming, as BoxRec states, the first person to regain the world heavyweight title. He remained champion until losing to Sonny Liston in 1962, retired in 1972 with a record of 55 wins, 8 losses and 1 draw per BoxRec, and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0460. Firsts disposition: 'First boxer to regain the world heavyweight championship (1960)' ASSERTED — supported by Encyclopaedia Britannica ('first to hold the world heavyweight championship twice'; regained June 20, 1960) and BoxRec ('first person to regain the world heavyweight title'). The youngest-champion (21, 1956, youngest at the time) and 1952 Olympic gold claims are also asserted, each supported by both sources on this record. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Patterson's first is a resilience record disguised as a trivia answer — no heavyweight before him had climbed back after losing the crown, and he did it against the man who had knocked him down seven times. His Chicago title win in 1956 also anchors him, briefly but really, in this graph's home city. Photo: CLEARED — Floyd Patterson 1960.jpg, Public domain.
