Combined Graph record U-07763 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-6891.

Oliver Lewis (1856–1924) was an American jockey from Fayette County, Kentucky, who rode Aristides to victory in the first Kentucky Derby, at the Louisville Jockey Club — now Churchill Downs — on May 17, 1875. Lewis, then 19, was one of 13 Black jockeys in the 15-horse field, and Aristides was trained by Ansel Williamson, a Black trainer. Riding to instructions to force the pace for a stablemate, Lewis instead won by two lengths in 2 minutes 37.75 seconds, then an American record for a mile and a half. He and Aristides finished second in the Belmont Stakes that season, and he never rode in another Derby. Very little of his later life is documented; encyclopedia accounts say he supplied handicapping information to bookmakers and became a bookmaker himself. Accounts of his death place disagree — most give Lexington, Kentucky, in 1924, while others give Cincinnati, Ohio — and this record does not resolve the conflict.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0175. Firsts disposition: ASSERTED in its inherent form — Lewis won the first Kentucky Derby (May 17, 1875, aboard Aristides), supported by all three sources in this record, including the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights; no broader 'first' is claimed. FLAG: documentation of Lewis's life beyond the 1875 season is thin in every source, and accounts conflict on his place of death (Lexington in the encyclopedia, Commission, and BlackPast accounts used here; Cincinnati in other published accounts) — the description shows the conflict rather than resolving it. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Lewis won the most famous horse race in America at its birth and was then nearly erased from its telling for a century; the thinness of his file is itself evidence of that erasure. What survives — one race, ridden exactly as instructed and won anyway — is enough to hold the record. Photo: HELD — depiction unconfirmed (see visual asset basis).
