Erin Jackson is an American speed skater from Ocala, Florida, who became the first Black woman to win gold in an individual event at the Winter Olympic Games. Jackson came to the ice from inline speed skating and roller derby, taking up long-track speed skating only in 2017; within months she had qualified for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic team, where she placed 24th in the 500 metres. At the U.S. Olympic trials for Beijing 2022 she slipped in the 500 metres and finished third, and she reached the Games only after teammate Brittany Bowe gave up her own spot in the event. Jackson rewarded that act by winning the Beijing 500 metres on February 13, 2022, in 37.04 seconds, becoming the first Black woman to win an individual Winter Olympic gold medal and the first American woman to win the Olympic 500 metres since Bonnie Blair in 1994. A three-time Olympian, she has remained among the world's leading 500-metre sprinters and holds the American record in the distance, set in 2021.

Notes
Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0207. Firsts disposition: ASSERTED — first Black woman to win an individual Winter Olympic gold medal (Beijing 2022, 500m, 37.04), supported independently by Team USA's profile and Team USA's anniversary reporting, with NBC Olympics corroborating. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Jackson's gold is among the most improbable in Winter Olympic history — an inline skater from a Florida city with no ice rink, on Olympic ice within months of taking up the sport. The Brittany Bowe spot-surrender that made the start possible is part of the record, not a footnote to it. Photo: CLEARED — Erin Jackson, U.S. Speedskater 04.jpg, CC BY-SA 4.0.
