Willy T. Ribbs is an American former racing driver from San Jose, California, who became the first African American to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. Born January 3, 1955, the son of an amateur road racer, Ribbs began his professional career in Europe, where he won a Dunlop championship and six races in eleven Formula Ford starts, and in 1986 he became the first Black driver to test a Formula One car, driving for Bernie Ecclestone's Brabham team. His greatest success came in the SCCA Trans-Am Series, where he won seventeen races driving for teams including Dan Gurney's and Jack Roush's. After failing to qualify at Indianapolis in 1984 and 1985, and with funding from Bill and Camille Cosby's Raynor-Cosby Motorsports, Ribbs qualified 29th for the 1991 Indianapolis 500 with a four-lap average of 217.358 mph, though an engine failure ended his race after five laps. He returned in 1993, qualifying 30th and finishing 21st, the first Black driver to complete the full 500 miles. Ribbs also competed in NASCAR and IMSA in a career spanning more than two decades.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0214. Firsts disposition: ASSERTED — first African American to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 (1991), supported by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, BlackPast and the Children's Museum of Indianapolis; the secondary first (first Black driver to test a Formula One car, Brabham, 1986) is likewise carried on two sources (BlackPast; Children's Museum). FLAG: The HistoryMakers' finding aid gives Ribbs's birth year as 1956 against 1955 in BlackPast and Wikipedia; the description follows the majority (January 3, 1955) and the discrepancy is recorded here rather than hidden. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Ribbs's career documents the sponsorship barrier as plainly as any in American racing — the talent is in the Trans-Am win column, and the Indy breakthrough required private backing to happen when the industry would not fund it. His 1993 finish, completing the full 500 miles, is the result the 1991 headline promised. Photo: CLEARED — Willy T. Ribbs (1984).jpg, CC BY-SA 3.0.
