Combined Graph record U-07797 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-6925.

Antron Brown is an American NHRA Top Fuel drag racer who in 2012 became the first African American to win a major U.S. auto racing championship. Born March 1, 1976, in Trenton, New Jersey, and raised in Chesterfield, Brown began his career racing Pro Stock Motorcycles before switching to Top Fuel dragsters in 2008, taking the pole position in his first Top Fuel event at Pomona. At the 2012 season finale in Pomona, California, he clinched the NHRA Top Fuel world championship by seven points over Tony Schumacher, 2,555 to 2,548, after Schumacher lost the final round — making Brown, in the NHRA's words, the first African-American to win a major motorsports championship. Brown added further Top Fuel world championships in 2015 and 2016, then formed his own team, AB Motorsports, in 2022. In November 2024, again at Pomona, he won his fourth Top Fuel world championship — his first as a team owner — on the same day as his 80th career NHRA event victory.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0215. Firsts disposition: ASSERTED — first African American to win a major U.S. auto racing series championship (NHRA Top Fuel, 2012), in the NHRA's own form (“first African-American to win a major motorsports championship”), corroborated independently by Associated Press reporting carried by Autoblog. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Brown's 2012 title closed a gap that Wendell Scott's single race win and Willy T. Ribbs's Indy starts had exposed for decades — a Black driver holding a major American series championship. That he later repeated the feat as an owner-driver with his own team converts the breakthrough into an institution. Photo: CLEARED — Antron Brown 2013.jpg, Public domain.
