VERIFIED evidence grade — build store (JSON graph)

Combined Graph record U-07853 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-6981.

Ron Simmons (born May 15, 1958, in Perry, Georgia) starred first in legitimate sport: a Florida State nose guard from 1977 to 1980, he was a two-time consensus All-American, had his No. 50 retired by the school, entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008, and played professionally for the Cleveland Browns, the Ottawa Rough Riders, and the Tampa Bay Bandits. In wrestling he first held WCW tag team gold with Butch Reed as Doom, before the match that defines his record: on August 2, 1992, in Baltimore, after an injury angle removed Sting from the match, Simmons won a raffle for the title opportunity, and the WCW title history records him as champion following the match against Big Van Vader — the first recognized African American world heavyweight champion in professional wrestling history. The word “recognized” is this record's honesty: Bobo Brazil's 1962 claim (CTL-E-6902) was never recognized by the NWA. Simmons later led the Nation of Domination as Faarooq and formed the APA in WWE, entering the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012.

The record

Notes

Firsts disposition: ASSERTED in the exact form 'first RECOGNIZED African American world heavyweight champion' (WCW, August 2, 1992) — double-sourced (WWE; Sports Illustrated). The qualifier is mandatory: Bobo Brazil's 1962 NWA claim was never recognized by the NWA, and the two records cross-state each other rather than compete. Photo: CLEARED — 'Ron Simmons 2022.jpg' (Brandon Oliver), CC BY 2.0 per Commons API extmetadata. A Commons file named 'Ron Simmons (cropped).jpg' was REJECTED: its description identifies Lex Luger — depiction not verifiable as Simmons. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): The packet's central first, stated in its exact recognized form and double-sourced to the promotion's own authority and an independent national outlet; his College Football Hall of Fame career keeps the record anchored in legitimate sport as well. Staged 2026-11-03 in packet W (professional wrestling), temp id — merge assigns the next sequential CTL-E id. No CTL-SPE roster id exists for professional wrestling — the AAES roster's wrestling shelf holds only Olympic wrestling and Bobo Brazil (CTL-E-6902). See the packet memo's roster-addition proposal.
