Combined Graph record U-07871 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-6999.

Fred McGriff (born October 31, 1963, in Tampa, Florida), nicknamed the "Crime Dog," hit 493 home runs across nineteen seasons — a total that for years stood as the highest by a player outside the Hall of Fame. A five-time All-Star and three-time Silver Slugger, McGriff led his league in home runs twice (1989, American League, Toronto; 1992, National League, San Diego) — the first player since the 1930s to lead both leagues in homers — and was the clean-up force on Atlanta's 1995 World Series championship team. His consistency was his signature: ten seasons of thirty or more home runs for five different franchises, including his hometown Tampa Bay Devil Rays, where he was the expansion club's first marquee name. Long kept out of Cooperstown by the crowded steroid-era ballot despite never being linked to performance-enhancing drugs, McGriff was elected unanimously by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee in December 2022 and inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2023.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0295. Firsts disposition: ASSERTED in sourced form — first player since the 1930s to lead each league in home runs (Hall of Fame and Wikipedia). The 'never linked to PEDs' framing is carried as the Hall-era reporting frames it (a claim about his reputation, not a laboratory fact). Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): The era committees exist for exactly this file — a clean slugger the writers' ballot buried. Photo: CLEARED (2007, CC BY-SA 3.0).
