CC Sabathia (born July 21, 1980, in Vallejo, California) was the ace of two franchises and one of the last workhorse left-handers. Sabathia won the 2007 American League Cy Young Award with Cleveland, going 19–7, and after a midseason trade to Milwaukee in 2008 carried the Brewers to their first postseason in twenty-six years on repeated short-rest starts. Signing the largest pitching contract of its time with the New York Yankees, he won nineteen games and the 2009 World Series in his first season in pinstripes, earning ALCS MVP. Over nineteen seasons he won 251 games and struck out 3,093 batters — one of only three left-handers with 250 wins and 3,000 strikeouts, alongside Randy Johnson and Steve Carlton. His public reckoning with alcoholism, announced on the eve of the 2015 postseason, made him a prominent voice on addiction among athletes. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2025, his first year of eligibility.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0306. Firsts disposition: no 'first' asserted in the description beyond club membership (three left-handers at 250/3,000) as the Hall of Fame states it. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Sabathia's Milwaukee autumn — a pennant race pitched on three days' rest, repeatedly, for a team he was renting — is the workhorse era's last exhibit.
