Kevin Garnett (born May 19, 1976, in Greenville, South Carolina) reopened the door from high school to the NBA. Drafted fifth overall by Minnesota in 1995 out of Chicago's Farragut Career Academy — the first player drafted directly from high school in twenty years — Garnett became the Timberwolves' franchise: the 2004 NBA MVP, a nine-time All-Star in Minnesota, and the league's most versatile defensive forward. Traded to Boston in 2007, he won the 2008 NBA championship and the Defensive Player of the Year Award in his first Celtics season. A fifteen-time All-Star across twenty-one seasons with Minnesota, Boston, and Brooklyn, he retired as one of three players with 25,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, and 5,000 assists. His intensity — and the max-contract economics his 1997 extension triggered, a factor in the 1998 lockout — reshaped the business of the league as well as its geometry. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020.
