Combined Graph record U-07897 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-7025.

Lenny Wilkens (October 28, 1937 – November 9, 2025), born in Brooklyn, New York, holds a place in the Hall of Fame three times over — as a player, as a coach, and as an assistant coach of the 1992 Olympic Dream Team. A smooth left-handed guard from Providence College, Wilkens was a nine-time All-Star across fifteen seasons with St. Louis, Seattle, Cleveland, and Portland, leading the league in assists in 1970. Beginning in 1969 he served as a player-coach — among the last and most successful of that dual role's practitioners — and as a full-time coach he won the 1979 NBA championship with Seattle. He retired from coaching in 2005 with 1,332 wins, then the most in NBA history (a mark since passed by Don Nelson and Gregg Popovich), and 2,487 games coached, still a record. His 1994 Coach of the Year Award with Atlanta and his stewardship of the 1996 Olympic team complete a record of durability unmatched among the league's sideline figures. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a player in 1989 and as a coach in 1998.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0367 (kind: player-coach). Firsts disposition: the wins record is stated as a retired-with-the-record fact, expressly noting it has since been surpassed — the brief's 'at retirement' framing. Triple Hall of Fame standing carried per the Hall of Fame. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Wilkens's monument is duration — sixty years in the league's uniform and suit, honored in every role the game has. Photo: CLEARED (1968 portrait, public domain).
