Randy Gene Moss (born February 13, 1977, in Rand, West Virginia) played two seasons at Marshall University (1996–97), where, the West Virginia Encyclopedia records, he set virtually every school and conference season record and was a first-team All-American both years. The Minnesota Vikings drafted him 21st overall in 1998, and he produced one of the great rookie seasons in league history — 69 catches for 1,313 yards and a league-leading, rookie-record 17 touchdown receptions, per the Pro Football Hall of Fame — as Minnesota went 15–1. Over 14 seasons with the Vikings, Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots, Tennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers, he finished with 982 receptions for 15,292 yards and 156 touchdowns; with New England in 2007 he broke Jerry Rice's mark for touchdown catches in a season with 23. Moss was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018, in his first year of eligibility.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0399. Firsts disposition: ASSERTED as sourced — NFL single-season touchdown-reception record (23, 2007, Pro Football Hall of Fame) and rookie touchdown-reception record (17, 1998, carried on the Hall's finalist/career record and Raiders' Hall profile). Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Moss changed defensive geometry — the deep ball stopped being a gamble and became a scheme — and he did it, distinctively, at full speed and half visible effort.
