Terrell Eldorado Owens (born December 7, 1973, in Alexander City, Alabama), nicknamed 'T.O.', played football, basketball and track at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (1992–95), finishing, per the Southern Conference, as the program's career leader in receiving yards (2,320) and receptions (144) and earning first-team All-Southern Conference honors in 1995. The San Francisco 49ers drafted him in the third round (89th overall) in 1996 despite the low scouting visibility of an FCS program. Across 15 NFL seasons with San Francisco, Philadelphia, Dallas, Buffalo and Cincinnati, the Pro Football Hall of Fame records career totals of 1,078 catches for 15,934 yards and 153 touchdowns — yardage that ranked second all-time and touchdowns third at his retirement — with five All-Pro selections and six Pro Bowls. Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018, Owens famously delivered his induction speech from the Chattanooga campus rather than at the Canton ceremony, as the Southern Conference records.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0400. Firsts disposition: no 'first' claimed; the sourced distinctions carried are his career rankings at retirement (second in receiving yards, third in receiving touchdowns — Pro Football Hall of Fame) and his Chattanooga-campus Hall of Fame speech (Southern Conference). Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): The numbers were never the argument against Owens, and the record here keeps them in front: third-round pick from an FCS school, second in yards when he walked away.
