Condredge Holloway Jr. (born January 25, 1954, in Huntsville, Alabama) enrolled at the University of Tennessee in 1971 and, as a sophomore, made history in the season opener at Georgia Tech on September 9, 1972, becoming — in the University of Tennessee's own account — the first Black player to start at quarterback for an SEC team, in a 34–3 win televised nationally on ABC; he was also the first Black member of Tennessee's baseball program. A three-year starter (1972–74) nicknamed 'The Artful Dodger', he was named SEC Sophomore of the Year in 1972. Drafted by the New England Patriots in the 12th round of the 1975 NFL draft as a defensive back, he instead signed in the Canadian Football League with the Ottawa Rough Riders (1975–80), winning the Grey Cup in 1976. With the Toronto Argonauts (1981–86) he was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Player in 1982 after throwing for 4,661 yards and 31 touchdowns, and won a second Grey Cup in 1983; he finished his career with the BC Lions in 1987 and was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1999, with career totals, per the National Football Foundation, of 25,193 passing yards and 155 touchdowns.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0410. Firsts disposition: ASSERTED with CORRECTED YEAR — first Black player to start at quarterback for an SEC team on September 9, 1972 (University of Tennessee, two program accounts), NOT 1971 as the brief stated; 1971 was his enrollment year, and as a freshman he could not have started under the era's eligibility structure — the discrepancy is flagged in the lane report. CFL Grey Cup titles carried as 1976 (Ottawa) and 1983 (Toronto) per the National Football Foundation; the brief's '1985 Grey Cup' is not supported by any source consulted and is not carried. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): The NFL offered Holloway a job at the wrong position; Canada offered him his own — and his CFL Hall of Fame career is the measure of what the SEC barrier, and the NFL's, cost and proved.
