Randall Wade Cunningham Sr. (born March 27, 1963, in Santa Barbara, California) left the University of Nevada, Las Vegas as, in the College Football Hall of Fame's words, the most accomplished player in school history — its career passing and punting leader, holder of 18 school records including 8,020 passing yards and 59 touchdown passes, and a two-time conference Offensive Player of the Year who was also an All-America punter. Drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round in 1985, he became the starter in 1987 and made three consecutive Pro Bowls (1988–90) on a dual-threat game that Andscape, quoting Warren Moon, describes as the first of its kind: a quarterback who could genuinely run as well as throw. Injuries and a first retirement after the 1995 season followed, then a celebrated return with the Minnesota Vikings: in 1998 he led a 15–1 team, throwing 34 touchdown passes against 10 interceptions, and was named the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year. He finished his career, per the National Football Foundation, with 4,928 rushing yards — then the standard for a quarterback — after later stints with Dallas and Baltimore, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame in 2009.

Notes
Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0411. Firsts disposition: ASSERTED as attributed framing — 'first superstar dual-threat quarterback' (Andscape, with Warren Moon's supporting assessment quoted there), not carried as an unqualified statistical first; his 4,928 career rushing yards are carried as the National Football Foundation states them (second all-time at its writing, the quarterback record before Michael Vick). Cunningham is not a Pro Football Hall of Fame member and no such claim is made. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Cunningham's 1998 season is the record's center of gravity — a retired quarterback returning to run the league's best offense — but the pioneering claim rests on the Eagles years, when the dual-threat game had no name yet.
