Russell Carrington Wilson, born November 29, 1988, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and raised in Richmond, Virginia, is a former NFL quarterback best known for his decade with the Seattle Seahawks. Drafted in the third round, 75th overall, in 2012 after playing at NC State and Wisconsin, he won the starting job as a rookie. In his second season he led Seattle to a 43-8 victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII, the franchise's first Super Bowl title; Associated Press coverage of that win identified him as the second Black starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl, after Doug Williams. Seattle returned to Super Bowl XLIX the following season and lost to New England. Wilson later played for Denver, Pittsburgh and the New York Giants; ESPN's career review credits him with 46,966 passing yards and 353 touchdowns and ten Pro Bowl selections across a fourteen-season career.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0414. Firsts disposition: second Black starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl (Super Bowl XLVIII, after Doug Williams) — carried as Associated Press coverage stated it at the time; no broader 'first' is claimed. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Wilson's Seattle decade — efficiency, mobility and a franchise-first title — is the core of the record; his Hall of Fame candidacy is debated in current ESPN coverage and is not asserted here.
