Katie Smith (born June 4, 1974) is a retired American guard who retired as the all-time leading scorer in women's professional basketball and now coaches. An Ohio State star from Logan, Ohio, she began her professional career in the rival ABL, winning its only two championships with the Columbus Quest (1997, 1998), then joined the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx in 1999. A 2005 trade sent her to the Detroit Shock, where she won WNBA titles in 2006 and 2008 — the second as Finals MVP — before closing her playing career with Washington, Seattle, and New York in 2013. Her combined professional total of 7,885 points (6,452 in the WNBA) stood as the women's professional record at her retirement, and her 906 WNBA three-pointers ranked second only to Diana Taurasi. She won three Olympic gold medals (2000, 2004, 2008) and was inducted into both the Naismith Memorial and Women's Basketball Halls of Fame in 2018. As a coach she served on New York's staff from 2014, was the Liberty's head coach in 2018–19, was Minnesota's associate head coach from 2020 to 2024, and joined Ohio State's staff in 2024.

Notes

NOT in the AAES roster v2 — roster-addition proposal for the AAES intake; no SPE id invented. Minnesota, Detroit, Washington, Seattle, and New York are not homed in the graph, so no played_for edges. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Smith's record bridges the league's prehistory — an ABL champion who became a foundational WNBA scorer — and her coaching chapter (a head-coaching stint and a long associate role under Cheryl Reeve) is carried as part of the same record, per the packet brief.
