Combined Graph record U-07954 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-7082.

Lloyd Marshall was born June 4, 1914, in Madison County, Georgia, was raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and won two Cleveland Golden Gloves titles in 1934 and 1935, the International Boxing Hall of Fame records. The Hall records that he relocated to the West Coast and turned professional in 1937 in Sacramento, meeting leading fighters from the start. In one of his finest bouts, the Hall records, he scored eight knockdowns en route to an eighth-round stoppage of Ezzard Charles, and in 1944 he strung together victories over Nate Bolden, Jake LaMotta, Holman Williams and Joey Maxim. The Hall credits Marshall, a skillful boxer with power in both hands, with defeating nine world champions in his career. His totals are carried only in attributed form: the Hall's biography gives 64 wins, 25 losses and 4 draws with 32 knockouts in 93 bouts, while BoxRec's record listing gives 70 wins, 25 losses and 4 draws with 36 knockouts in 99 fights. Marshall retired in 1951, died August 4, 1997, in Sacramento, and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2010.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0455. Firsts disposition: no first is claimed for Marshall in the sources used. Record-total disposition (contested, carried split, never blended): the Hall biography gives 64-25-4 (32 KOs) in 93 bouts; BoxRec's listing gives 70-25-4 (36 KOs) in 99 fights — both are carried in the description in attributed form. Debut-year variance: the Hall biography says he turned pro in 1937 in Sacramento; other listings date his professional debut to 1936 — the description follows the Hall and the variance is flagged here. Identity: this record is Lloyd Marshall of Madison County, Georgia, and Cleveland, Ohio, a Murderers' Row-era light heavyweight who never appears in the sources used as a world-title challenger of record. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Marshall's case is the avoided-contender case — nine beaten world champions without a title reign — and his Hall induction in 2010 is the record's own verdict on that career.
