Maurice Smith (born December 13, 1961, in Seattle, Washington) is an American former kickboxer and mixed martial artist who became the first Black champion in UFC history. A multiple-time world champion kickboxer — he held the WKC light heavyweight, WKA heavyweight, and ISKA heavyweight titles across a 53–13–5 kickboxing career — Smith crossed into MMA through Japan's Pancrase in 1993 and, training with Frank Shamrock in the partnership they called The Alliance, helped pioneer the cross-training model modern MMA is built on. In his UFC debut at UFC 14 on July 27, 1997, in Birmingham, Alabama, the heavy underdog Smith outlasted champion Mark Coleman over 21 minutes to win the heavyweight title by unanimous decision — a win the UFC itself marks as making him the first African American UFC champion, and the first significant UFC victory for a striking-based fighter. He defended the title against David “Tank” Abbott at UFC 15, then lost it to Randy Couture by majority decision at UFC 15.5 in Japan on December 21, 1997, after a 147-day reign. Smith fought on until age 51, closing his career in 2013, and was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame's Pioneer Wing in 2017.

Notes

Career MMA totals differ by database: Sherdog's statistical profile gives 12–14, while Sherdog's own career retrospective and other databases give 14–14; his UFC mark was 4–3. The description therefore states no single career total (GOV-004: the split is shown, not blended). The cleared photograph's Commons file metadata carries a 2017 date — an upload/scan date; the image depicts Smith at UFC 19 in 1999. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Smith's Coleman win is the hinge between the UFC's wrestler era and the cross-trained modern sport — and it was a Black striker from Seattle who turned it. This record's importance to the graph needs no inflation. Photo: CLEARED — Maurice Smith 1999.jpg, CC BY-SA 4.0 (file metadata date is an upload date; see above).
