Carlos Newton (born August 17, 1976, in The Valley, Anguilla) is an Anguilla-born Canadian retired mixed martial artist who became the first Canadian — and the first Black — UFC welterweight champion. Newton moved to Canada as a child and trained at Warrior MMA in Newmarket, Ontario, where his self-styled “Dragon Ball Jiu-Jitsu,” blending jiu-jitsu, judo, wrestling, and boxing, earned him the name “The Ronin.” He reached the UFC 17 middleweight tournament final in 1998, losing a split decision to Dan Henderson, then built his name in Japan. On May 4, 2001, at UFC 31 in Atlantic City, the 24-year-old Newton submitted champion Pat Miletich with a third-round bulldog choke — the first bulldog choke finish in UFC history — to take the welterweight title. His first defense, against Matt Hughes at UFC 34 on November 2, 2001, ended in one of the sport's most debated finishes: Newton had Hughes in a triangle choke when Hughes lifted him and slammed him to the canvas; both men appeared unconscious, and referee John McCarthy awarded Hughes the win by knockout. Newton maintains Hughes was out from the choke first. He lost the UFC 38 rematch and later beat Renzo Gracie in Pride, retiring with a 16–14 record.

Notes
Newton's age on moving to Canada is given as eight by his encyclopedia biography and nine by Fightful; the description says only “as a child.” The UFC 34 finish is stated in both men's accounts, as its sources state it (GOV-004). Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Newton is the answer to a trivia question that undersells him — before St-Pierre, a Ronin from Anguilla by way of Newmarket held UFC gold, and the sport's strangest title finish still carries his name on both sides of the argument.
