Evidence note (master store)

The Source is a magazine entirely devoted to hip-hop, launched as a one-page newsletter in August 1988 by Harvard students Dave Mays and Jonathan Shecter to accompany their WHRB radio show Street Beat; it grew into a monthly magazine (subtitle 'The Magazine of Hip-Hop, Music, Culture & Politics'), moved operations to New York City, and at its mid-1990s peak was the monthly 'Bible of Hip-Hop' with a reported seven million monthly readers, known for its 5-mic rating system and Unsigned Hype column (per Ambrosia For Heads, 2018, quoting Mays's own account).
