Evidence note (master store)

Goris Vandersyde, Cornelius Kuyper and Peter Dalenberg, with their families and friends (sixty souls in all), were the first settlers where Roseland — then called High Prairie — now stands, settled two years after De Jong's 1847 South Holland settlement (i.e., 1849); Vandersyde bought 80 acres and later 160 more; 'Goris Vandersyke was the first postmaster' of the settlement (Chicago Tribune, Mar. 4, 1900, Roseland section; surname spelling as printed).
