Evidence note (master store)

The Stax Museum's own history timeline (Soulsville Foundation, tier 2) states that in 1960 Estelle Axton funded the studio's move from Brunswick, Tenn. to a former movie theatre on McLemore Ave. in Memphis, the company was renamed Stax (first two letters of founders Jim Stewart's and Estelle Axton's surnames), and the theatre was converted into a recording studio whose first single was Rufus and Carla Thomas's 'Cause I Love You' (1960), followed by recordings from Carla Thomas, the Mar-Keys, Booker T. and The MGs, Otis Redding and Sam & Dave; the site's footer gives the address 926 E. McLemore Ave, Memphis, TN 38106. Establishes existence, recording-studio type, the stored address and city, and the McLemore Ave studio's 1960 start; the predecessor label Satellite Records was founded in 1957 per the same timeline (fetched in full 2026-10-17)
