Benne wafers are thin, tuile-like cookies, crunchy and light with a delicate nuttiness from toasted sesame seeds (Saveur, adapted from The Lee Bros. Charleston Kitchen; ingredient list headed by sesame seeds). Charleston Magazine adds that benne is the Bantu word for sesame and that the seeds were brought from Africa with enslaved people in the early 18th century, making the wafers a Charleston staple — supporting the stored 'Charleston Black tradition' note. Stored key ingredient (sesame seeds) established.
