Dek: She built a coffee company — a full-service wholesale and distribution business — long before this expo weekend. Here is what she actually built, and why it matters.
The Great Food Expo is the occasion for this series, and Kim Fields — the actress and director of The Facts of Life, Living Single, and Netflix's The Upshaws — is one of its most instructive subjects. Her more than 40 years in entertainment are the famous half of her résumé. The other half gets less attention.
In 2017, Fields launched Signature Blends by KF with partners Russell Wiggins and Angela Peterson: a full-service wholesaler and distributor of coffee, tea, and coffee dry rubs, based in Atlanta. She has described coffee as a lifelong passion — one that began, by her own telling, with the aroma from her second-grade teacher's thermos — and the business as a deliberate, researched move: "coffee's been here, and coffee ain't going nowhere, and it's about to grow," she told Black Enterprise's SistersInc. podcast in 2020. In August 2024, Signature Blends became the official coffee offering of the Stonefield Villa Resort in Saint Lucia.
This is the celebrity-to-founder pipeline done right, and it is worth studying precisely because it is rare. The pattern for famous Black women in food is usually a licensing deal — a name on someone else's product. Fields built distribution: wholesale accounts, corporate clients, schools, hotels, grocery. That is infrastructure, not endorsement.
It is also a case study in the capital problem. Fields financed her entry with decades of entertainment earnings — the equivalent of the "friends and family" round that most Black food founders do not have. Her success is real and instructive, but it should not be mistaken for a replicable path. The question her example puts to this expo — and the question CultureTechLens will be asking on the floor in Rosemont — is what she would tell a founder with the recipe but not the runway.
Celebrity founders open doors. The measure of the example is whether it also hands out keys.
