Dek: Nine tracks flowing as one, the moral center of seventies soul — but the middle stretch drifts, and no sequencing polish hides it. A 95, not a 100.
Recorded between mid-1970 and early 1971 at Motown’s Hitsville studios in Detroit, What’s Going On was Marvin Gaye’s break from the label’s hit factory — the first Motown album he produced himself, with the Funk Brothers and arranger David Van De Pitte giving his nine-song suite its orchestral sweep.
Berry Gordy reportedly called it the worst thing he had ever heard and refused to release it; Gaye held out until the title single proved him wrong, reaching number two on the pop charts. The album’s Vietnam-era moral witness — ecology, poverty, police violence — made it the template for the concept-driven soul album.
The archive chose it because no honest accounting of Black music can skip it — but also because its reputation has hardened into untouchability, and untouchable records don’t get read closely. We read it closely.
The archive’s verdict
CTL score: 95/100
The suite concept holds — nine tracks flowing as one, Gaye’s overdubbed choir against the Funk Brothers — and the highs (“Mercy Mercy Me,” the title track) are untouchable. But the middle stretch drifts: “Flyin’ High (In the Friendly Sky)” and “Save the Children” are vibes in search of songs, and the continuous-flow sequencing can’t hide it. Berry Gordy heard a mess; he was wrong about the album and half-right about the pacing. Still the moral center of seventies soul, just not the flawless one its reputation claims.
Key tracks: “What’s Going On,” “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology),” “Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)”
