The CultureTechLens Index — Flagship Report

A monthly, data-driven ranking of cultural figures, moments, artifacts, and places in the Black cultural record. This is the citable record: the research ID, the method, the data, the limits, and the download.

What the Index measures

Each edition scores ten candidates on three signals — no hand-tuned scores:

  • Public attention (40%) — trailing-30-day English Wikipedia pageviews, log-normalized.
  • Evidence depth (40%) — CTL research-corpus claim grades, relationship counts, and biography coverage.
  • Momentum (20%) — pageview trend versus the prior 30 days.

Rankings describe the data. They do not crown winners.

Sources

  • English Wikipedia pageview statistics (Wikimedia Foundation), trailing 30 days versus the prior 30 days.
  • The CultureTechLens research corpus — source package CTL-DR-LIFE-001 for Edition 2026-10 — with evidence grades on every claim.
  • Reproduce it: the open research record on GitHub carries the methodology, the scoring code, and the edition data.

Limitations

Stated plainly, because a ranking that asks to be cited should survive contact with a critic:

  • Pageviews measure English-Wikipedia attention, not importance. The Afro pick — the deepest-documented artifact in the edition, evidence depth 100.0 — drew 106 lookups against the Cadillac’s 33,922. The gap is the finding, not a bug; but it means attention-heavy scores favor what the English-speaking internet already knows.
  • Evidence depth scores CTL’s own corpus. We are grading our own research as one of three signals. The corpus is published and auditable, and the methodology is under external peer review — but the circularity is real and disclosed.
  • Candidate selection is the least documented step. The ten candidates per edition are chosen by the founder and research lead from the corpus; the selection rationale is described in the methodology but not mechanically reproducible.
  • Scores are relative within each edition’s ten. Normalization runs per edition, so a 78.8 in October cannot be directly compared to a future edition’s 78.8.
  • The 40/40/20 weights are a judgment call, not a derived optimum. They are fixed across editions so the series stays comparable.

Trust & evidence

Evidence before authority. CultureTechLens publishes its methods, its limits, and its corrections alongside its findings. Claims carry grades — VERIFIED, SUPPORTED, PROVISIONAL, DISPUTED, UNRESOLVED — and unknowns are never reported as zero.

Every claim graded. Every source named. Every correction public — none to date.
