Dek: A two-time Emmy-winning journalist and an Emmy-winning culinary producer wrote a bestselling cookbook together. The book table is the business model.

The cookbook economy pairs two formidable talents: Tamron Hall — two-time Emmy Award-winning journalist, executive producer and host of the nationally syndicated Tamron Hall Show — and Lish Steiling, chef, food stylist, Emmy-winning culinary producer, Chopped champion, and for seven years the vice president of culinary operations for Giada De Laurentiis. Together they wrote a bestseller, A Confident Cook: Recipes for Joyous, No-Pressure Fun in the Kitchen.

Watch the sequence, because it is a machine: stage appearance creates the crowd, the crowd creates the line, the line creates the signing, the signing sells the book, the book sells the brand. The book table is not a sideshow at an expo. For many food personalities, it is the actual monetization engine — the booth samples are marketing; the book is the product with margin.

This matters for the Black foodways story because the cookbook economy has historically been one of the few publishing lanes where Black culinary authority could be built without asking permission. From the community cookbooks compiled by Black church women in the early twentieth century — fundraising tools that doubled as archives — to today's chef-driven bestsellers, the cookbook has been a vehicle for Black food knowledge to travel on its own terms.

Hall is also a media story. A Black woman journalist who built a nationally syndicated talk show — now in its sixth season, one of the longest-running Disney-produced daytime shows — and then carried that authority into a bestselling cookbook is a signal about where food media's center of gravity is moving: toward personality-driven, culturally fluent authority rather than the old gatekeeper model.

CultureTechLens will be on the expo floor all weekend. We will be watching what gets cooked, what gets said — and who is standing in line at the book tables afterward.
