The claim

"The Chicago Defender single-handedly caused the Great Migration."

CTL verdict: REFUTED as stated

In the dossier ledger this sits as CLM-011, DISPUTED — with the evidence file's fuller vocabulary recording it as REFUTED (the two map to each other by the dossier's stated rule). The migration was multi-causal — WWI labor demand, Southern white violence, agricultural collapse (established scholarship). No single newspaper caused it.

What is documented instead

  • CLM-007 — the advocacy is real. On May 15, 1917 Abbott declared the "Great Northern

Drive": job listings, train schedules, and editorials urging Southern readers north.

  • CLM-008 (VERIFIED) — the distribution is real. Pullman porters carried Defender bundles

on Southern rail routes and dropped them at barbershops and churches, circumventing local bans and newsstand exclusion — corroborated by the Congressional Record tribute naming porters the paper's "unofficial circulation agents," and by NMAAHC records.

  • CLM-010 — the reception is real. Reader letters from 1916–1917 (preserved via Emmett J.

Scott's 1920 federal report) asked for jobs, train fares, and relocation advice — the paper steering decisions already in motion.

  • Scale: circulation rose from 300 copies (1905) to over 250,000 weekly by 1929; by WWI

two-thirds of readers were outside Chicago.

What remains legend

CLM-040 (UNRESOLVED / UNVERIFIABLE): porter-network mechanics — payment, commissions, exact routes, quantities, named agents — and the familiar details of bundles hidden in linen stacks or tossed from moving trains. The network is verified; its mechanics are not. Do not publish the mechanics as fact.

Corrected wording (use this)

"The Defender was a documented catalyst of the Great Migration — not its sole cause."
