Who Preserves Black Chicago? — Directory
Source: CultureTechLens.
The four findings people ask for most
- 1. The Johnson Publishing Company archive left Chicago. Sold at the 2019 bankruptcy auction
(~$30M), it entered joint Smithsonian NMAAHC / Getty ownership on July 28, 2022 and is housed in Washington, DC — and it is closed to the public during the 2022–2029 Getty/NMAAHC conservation and digitization program (CTL-PHOTO-SUP-002). Do not send researchers to Chicago for it.
- 2. The Black Metropolis Research Consortium (BMRC) is the one-door answer — roughly 26
member institutions searchable through one portal.
- 3. The Harsh Collection (Chicago Public Library) is the priority archive for Black Chicago —
including the Abbott-Sengstacke Family Papers — and its research access was temporarily closed at the source brief's verification; re-check before citing access.
- 4. The Chicago Defender's own business archives remain UNRESOLVED post-2019 — stated plainly
here because "nobody knows yet" is a useful answer a researcher can plan around.
