Blind pianist Arizona Dranes introduced secular barrelhouse and ragtime piano styles into Black church music at Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ (40th and State, Chicago) in the 1920s, giving gospel its rhythmic identity and influencing Thomas Dorsey and the young Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
