Reel-to-reel tapes and cassettes of Chicago DJ sets circulated locally and internationally, carrying house music beyond the clubs before commercial distribution existed. Ron Hardy's reel-to-reel edits — made for Muzic Box play — were themselves a production technology, with edits circulating as tapes before any vinyl release.
