Commercial district whose activity 'was rivaled only by State Street in Chicago's Loop' before WWII (per 2000 Chronicle). C. 1955-58 storefronts included clothing, shoe, hat, furrier shops, taverns, drugstores, lunch counter, taxi stand, cigar shop (photographic evidence). Later deteriorated with vacancy and fire.
