79th Street was a major Black commercial corridor of working- and middle-class neighborhoods. Independence Bank, co-founded by George E. Johnson in 1964, anchored the corridor at 79th and Cottage Grove, and the corridor included Black-owned financial institutions, theatres (Avalon/New Regal) and retail.
