Black retailers' supply-chain dependency

CTL-E-1352 · Practice · other · 1960s-2018 (evidence range)

PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Black Chicago retailers depended on white-owned supply and distribution chains — from the Madison Street businesses picketed in 1965-66 to distributors sending expired food to Black-neighborhood stores. The one documented Black-owned supply chain in the sources (an NOI grocery partnered with Black producers) collapsed after integration. Whether Black entrepreneurs acquired commercial property through contract selling is unresolved: all documented contract-selling evidence in Chicago is residential.
