John H. Murphy Sr.

PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Founder of the Murphy family's ownership of the Baltimore Afro-American: born into slavery, a U.S. Colored Troops sergeant in the Civil War, he bought the paper's printing equipment for $200 in 1897 and merged his Sunday School Helper with The Ledger and The Afro-American. Crusader for racial justice; president of the National Negro Press Association (1913); died 1922.
