VERIFIED evidence grade of this record

Desiree Sanders is the founder and owner of Afrocentric Bookstore, described in Katie Mitchell's Prose to the People (2025) as Chicago's first Black woman-owned bookstore. A bookish South Side childhood — she has named Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings as the book that showed her what was possible — became an institution: she opened Afrocentric in 1990 at 234 S. Wabash Avenue, later operated at 333 S. State Street, and in 2003 opened Afrocentric Bookstore II at 47th Street and King Drive in Bronzeville. For eighteen years the store sold Black fiction and nonfiction and hosted signings, discussions, and festivals, known for its curated inventory and art-filled rooms. Facing the economics that closed many Black independents, Sanders closed the store in the summer of 2008, a closing covered by the Citizen Newspaper Group.
