John H. White
VERIFIED evidence grade of this record
John H. White (born 1945 in Lexington, North Carolina) is an American photojournalist whose photographs of Black Chicago in 1973–74 are among the defining visual records of the city's South Side. Then a Chicago Daily News photographer, he was assigned by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's DOCUMERICA program to photograph Chicago from June to October 1973 and again in the spring of 1974. His subject was the daily life of African American Chicago — activism, music, youth, housing, work, worship, and street life — rendered as a portrait of pride, love, and struggle. The work is held by the National Archives (series 412-DA), digitized and free of copyright restriction. White joined the Chicago Sun-Times in 1978 and remained on staff until May 2013; in 1982 he won the Pulitzer Prize for Photojournalism.
