PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Hidden Figures, directed by Theodore Melfi and written by Melfi with Allison Schroeder from Margot Lee Shetterly's nonfiction book, was released by 20th Century Fox in limited release on December 25, 2016, and wide on January 6, 2017. It tells the story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson — the Black women mathematicians whose calculations at NASA's Langley center carried the early space program while segregation ordered their working lives. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards — Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer — and won the Screen Actors Guild Award for its cast's ensemble performance. A commercial success at a reported $236 million worldwide on a $25 million budget, it moved its three subjects from specialist history into the general curriculum. Unusually for this wave, the graph already holds the underlying record: Johnson (CTL-E-1065), Vaughan (CTL-E-1036), and Jackson (CTL-E-1077) hold Person records, and the book's publication holds an Event record (CTL-E-3667). This film record completes the set — the dramatization filed beside the women themselves.

Notes

Statistics: 20th Century Fox, 2016; 3 Academy Award nominations; SAG Award for Outstanding Cast. The film goes on the shelf one step from the women's own records, where it belongs. · Photo slot: HELD — poster/key art and production stills for this title are copyrighted studio material and were NOT pulled (per CTL-PHOTO-001 and the wave brief: never force non-free key art); no cleared Commons image was verified for this title in this run. Slot honestly HELD pending a cleared visual.
