Marvin Ellison's parents were sharecroppers in rural West Tennessee, and his first retail job paid $4.35 an hour. Both facts are in the standard biographies — Emory University's Goizueta Business School profile and Lowe's own appointment biography, cited here — and both matter because Ellison tells them himself: raised in Brownsville, Tennessee, one of seven children, playing bass guitar in the family's gospel group, the Ellison Family, he worked part-time as a Target security guard, at $4.35 an hour, while studying business administration at the University of Memphis. From that register position runs one of the most consequential careers in American retail.

The ladder, as his Lowe's biography lays it out: fifteen years at Target, rising through store and corporate roles; twelve years at The Home Depot, where he became executive vice president of U.S. stores; then the chief executive's chair twice. He became chairman and CEO of JCPenney in 2015, and in July 2018 moved to Lowe's as chairman, president, and CEO. That sequence makes him, in the formulation used by the coverage that verifies this graph record, the only African American to have served as chairman and chief executive of two Fortune 500 companies — JCPenney and Lowe's — and the first, per Emory's profile, to be president and CEO of two Fortune 500 corporations. He earned an executive MBA from Emory's Goizueta Business School in 2005, between the Target and Home Depot decades.

At Lowe's he runs a Fortune 50 company of more than 2,200 stores and some 300,000 associates, and the graph's verification source is current evidence of the brief: PYMNTS' February 2026 earnings coverage of Lowe's, quoting its chairman, president, and CEO on deploying digital tools and artificial intelligence to grow the professional-contractor business. His governance footprint extends beyond the company — His Lowe's biography notes his directorships of FedEx and the Retail Industry Leaders Association.

The graph carries Ellison as a Person at VERIFIED grade, affiliated with Lowe's and profiled in its Black Fortune 500 CEOs list, alongside the other current Black chief executives of the largest American companies. The birth year is given variously as 1965 and 1966 in published sources — a July 26, 1965 date appears in one profile and 1966 in his Lowe's biography — so this entry does not print a birthdate and flags the variant in the index. What is not in dispute is the arc the record exists to document: sharecroppers' son from Brownsville, $4.35 an hour at Target, and the only Black executive to have held the top job at two Fortune 500 retailers.

The Lowe's tenure supplies the current chapter. Ellison arrived in July 2018 after Lowe's had cycled through strategy resets, and his program has emphasized the professional contractor — the 'pro' customer — alongside the do-it-yourself base, with heavy investment in the digital and supply-chain systems that serve both. The PYMNTS earnings coverage that verifies this record, reporting Lowe's fourth-quarter fiscal 2025 results in February 2026, quotes him on deploying artificial-intelligence tools to personalize service for pro customers and grow business-to-business sales — the retailer framing technology as the next phase of the turnaround he was hired to lead. His board and civic roles run alongside: a director of FedEx, and former chairman of the Retail Industry Leaders Association, the trade body of the largest American retailers. The graph's edge structure reflects the record's shape: one Person, two Fortune 500 chief-executive tenures — JCPenney (2015–2018) and Lowe's (2018–present) — a distinction no other African American executive holds, stated by the verifying source in exactly those terms and repeated here without embroidery. The honors predate Lowe's: Fortune named him to its World's Greatest Leaders list in 2016, and Black Enterprise named him its 2016 Corporate Executive of the Year, per his Lowe's biography.
