Yo-Yo (born Yolanda Whitaker on August 4, 1971, in South Central Los Angeles) is the West Coast rapper who made female empowerment her explicit subject while most of the industry treated it as a slogan. A protégé of Ice Cube, she debuted on his AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted (1990), trading verses on "It's a Man's World," then released Make Way for the Motherlode (1991), carried by "You Can't Play with My Yo-Yo." She founded the Intelligent Black Women's Coalition and later the Yo-Yo School of Hip-Hop, turning the message into institutions. On screen she appeared in Boyz n the Hood (1991) and recurred on Martin as Keylolo, the role the CTL Short bills; in 2023 she joined A&E's Hip Hop Treasures as a field collector and played Duchess on Disney's Saturdays. CultureTechLens profiled Yo-Yo in Short #158.
