Herman Roberts (born 1924, Beggs, Oklahoma; died February 1, 2021) moved to Chicago at twelve in the Great Migration, attended Burke Elementary and Englewood High School, and built one of Black Chicago's great hospitality empires from a taxicab fleet that reached thirty-five cabs. In the early 1950s he opened the Lucky Spot lounge, then the Roberts Show Lounge in his former cab garage, booking Nina Simone, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, Sammy Davis Jr., Sam Cooke, Redd Foxx, Moms Mabley, and Dick Gregory. His first Roberts Motel opened in 1960 on 63rd Street and grew to eight motels; the sixth, in 1970, was a 250-room complex, and the Roberts Motel 500 Room hosted the official kickoff of Harold Washington's mayoral campaign. The HistoryMakers calls him the nation's foremost African American hotel and motel owner. He also held an Oklahoma ranch where he struck oil in 1981. Congressman Danny K. Davis entered a tribute in the Congressional Record on March 18, 2021.
