Jeff Friday is an American entertainment executive from Newark, New Jersey, who founded the American Black Film Festival (CTL-E-5637). An advertising executive — he left the presidency of the multicultural agency UniWorld Group to build the festival — he attended the Sundance Film Festival in January 1997, saw how few Black filmmakers, executives and stories were in the room, and four months later launched the first edition in Acapulco, Mexico, with his former boss and investor Byron E. Lewis and filmmaker Warrington Hudlin, drawing about 600 people. Friday later acquired full rights to the festival, renamed it the American Black Film Festival, and moved it to Miami, building it with his wife, co-founder Nicole Friday, into the leading U.S. festival platform for Black film — through ABFF Ventures (now operating as Nice Crowd, where he is founder and CEO) and Jeff Friday Media, the production company he formed in 2019. The festival's record in this graph has carried its founded_by edge as blocked since Shorts Wave 4; this record is the founder.

Notes

STAGED 2026-10-16 (747 Program, Priority Gaps — Wave 5) — not merged; awaits founder merge go. Gate A: no match in the live graph (3,381 entities) under exact, normalized, alias, or token-containment screening, 2026-10-16; the only 'friday' hit is the unrelated film Friday (CTL-E-5481). Vital status: LIVING — active founder/CEO at staging (2026 festival coverage). Birth date: the sources consulted for this record do not publish one (Essence's account places him at 29 in 1997); per the schema's no-invention rule the record omits it rather than deriving one, and the era field is carried on his career (1997–present). Nicole Friday is a co-founder in every source consulted; her own person record is a named further gap (also flagged in the Wave 4 packet). Project ID: PPL-001 per wave precedent (staged 'CULTGRAPH' ID is not registered). MEDIA LAYER (staged 2026-10-16; full per-asset PHOTO-001 records + embed specs in the packet's staged JSON, Drive packet folder): map = N/A (Person records carry no map slot under the media-layer rule; maps attach to places and institutions.) | visual_assets = HELD: No file-page-level PHOTO-001 license verification completed at staging; slot held rather than filled with an u | chart = FILLED (CTL-created SVG built only from this record's sourced facts and statistics; CTL-branded palette (black / deep ) | video = HELD (No CTL Short bills Jeff Friday — Short #140 bills the festival he founded and rides the festival's record (CTL) | audio = HELD (No CTL-owned or rights-cleared matching-entity audio exists at staging.
